Motorola KRZR K1 (GSM) and iSync

Last week, I mentioned that I bought a new KRZR K1. Unfortunately, as with all bleeding edge phones, it's not supported in iSync. Well, that was easy enough to fix, you simply have to edit the following file:

In the Finder, right-click on the iSync application and choose Show Package Contents.

Drill down to the following:
Contents -> Plugins -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> Plugins -> PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin -> Contents -> Resources. The file you need to edit is "MetaClasses.plist". Make a backup copy of your original, and replace it with my edited version here, along with the .tiff file. Restart iSync and you should be ready to go.

A big thanks to Elbert Cuenca, for providing the icon, it looks great!
**Note this only works on the GSM version of the KRZR K1, not the Verizon or Alltel CDMA versions.**

NOTE: Apple has included support for the K1 and K1m in 10.4.9. Check out the list here. Word of warning, I have not been able to get my K1 working, along with quite a few others in the comments below.

Have you ever gotten it to sync your ical? i used some differrent code from another site in my MetaClasses file and it gives me the option to sync the calendar... but it fails. The addressbook seems to sync either way though. Any ideas?

Just wanted to say this worked with the KRZR from US Cellular.

I also read in the release notes that Leopard's iSync will support KRZR. Hopefully this will add calendar support.

Thanks for the work,

Just wanted to thank you for that MetaClasses.plist file (and the nice .tiff). It worked better than other snippets that I'd found on HowardForums. Basically, the contacts names would be numbers.

I am also using 10.3.9 (iSync 1.5)
Any expert here got that setup working?

Fantastik. As a new mac convert that fix was as easy as 1 2 3.

Thanks for this! For the record, it DOES work with the Verizon K1m phone, although it only syncs the address book and not the calendar.

Guys, i'm about to buy a KRZR K1 and i wonder what do you really mean by "it worked".. I mean, can you transfer files from and to the phone? I ask cause I only see mentions about contacts, but nothing about the songs.

Thanks,

Anyone have luck getting Motorola Z3 (Rizr) to work w/ iSync?

Posted by: bva at February 3, 2007 8:06 AM

I guess everyone here who got it working are those using os x 10.4 and up.

I see a few users still using os x 10.3.9 who won't be able to get it sync at all. Am I wrong??

Hope I don't sound too ignorant but... I got my fiance's krzr to connect to my mac via bluetooth with no trouble at all. I transfered an mp3 file to it (audio folder) without any problem, but I cant find the file anywhere on the phone. I know its on there because i checked available memory before and after the transfer and the numbers match up. I guess I'm just not sure where to look or how to find this "audio" folder. Any ideas?

I just received the krzr k1 from cingular this week and it works beautifully with mac os x and isync via blue tooth. I love this phone it's awesome! My old razr I had to connect via usb wires. This phone is flawless.

Posted by: sean at March 23, 2007 7:11 AM

Although the Motorola KRZR K1m is supposedly supported in iSync 2.4, I know of no one able to use iSync with a Sprint K1m. In fact, few seem to be having any luck with a KRZR at all after the 10.4.9 update. I get the "not supported" error message anytime an attempt to add my K1m as a device in iSync. Further, the graphic of the phone shown is blue rather than black.

Posted by: Terry at March 25, 2007 8:49 PM

Just got a t-Mobile RIZR Z-3 and can't figure out how to sync it to my Mac. I read the comments in this link, but am not sure what, if anything to do. Also when I did a goodgle search, it told me about Glide but I do not see how to use this. Finally, since the phone came with a memory card, I can drag my address book into the RIZR - but, I don't know where to go from there.

Just bought a verizon krazr k1m. I am running an imac G4 10.4.9 and isync 2.4. Isync claims "no device found" when trying to add the phone. System profiler shows the phone is attached to the usb. Phone also does not charge on the usb. Do I need a specific USB cable? Thanks.

Posted by: Steve at May 2, 2007 9:10 AM

I tried to get my iSync to recognize it, but I don't have the "Metaclasses.plist" option. How can I get iSync to recognize my phone? If it helps, I'm on T-Mobile.
I have Mac OS 10.4.9 and iSync 2.4, but I don't have the Bluetooth icon in my System preferences. Does that mean that, even though I have Bluetooth in my Applications folder, that I have to get a USB Bluetooth adapter? So confused...

Posted by: Dani at May 5, 2007 10:18 AM

So I have the Metalcasses now, and I tried the plug-in above, but it still doesn't recognize my phone. Even if I get iSync to recognize my phone, will I get it to communicate with iCal? I'm looking for calendars, not contacts.

And on to another question... I recently noticed that my phone says it's using Edge technology. How is this so? I have T-Mobile, so it should say GPRS, right? So somehow I managed to change some setting to GPRS, but it still says Edge. Now I can't find what setting I changed, or where that option to change from Edge to GPRS even is. I can now no longer send text messages. Is it because I changed it to GPRS? If so, how do I change it back? and if not, WTF?!

Posted by: Dani at May 6, 2007 7:38 PM

Update to last post:

So I can receive text messages, I just can't send or reply. Any ideas? Please?

Posted by: sjc260 at September 9, 2007 6:46 AM

I just found a solution for my KRZR K1. I'm running iSync 2.4 with OS 10.4.10.

This fix makes it possible to sync address book contents, but not calendar contents.

Use the same file that Jeff linked above, but put it in the following location:

Drill down to the following:
Contents -> Plugins -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> Plugins -> Motorola-K1.phoneplugin -> Contents -> Resources.

Hope that helps! And thanks Jeff.

Dgopoww's solution above worked for me and dropped the phone image there too- works great thanks everyone ( ATT KRZR k1, os 10.4.1, iSync Version 2.4 (501.2)) VUT USB only, "calendar not supported"

What's is the current status of syncing this phone with my Mac address book. Found tons of threads with patches & info, but some of the most recent posts seem to say that the phone is supposedly supported now. I just bought one today, and it isn't working. What is the best way to get my contacts into this phone?

using isync 2.4 on system 10.4.10

i am using 10.4.10 on a macbook with iSync 2.4 and with the very excellent download from the top of the page from jcraven and the directions from Dgopoww it works perfectly. I am so chuffed! Months of searching and this site has sorted the address book for me! The calendar doesn't work but hey!

Thanks for all your efforts and help!

Thanks once again!!!!!!!

Posted by: David at November 3, 2007 1:50 AM

BTW I wanted to know if Leopard has solved the KRZR K1 iSync and iCal issues.

To find out I just went into an apple store in LA with my KRZR to try iSnyc under Leopard on a new macbook. I am sad to say if failed in exactly the same way it fails under 10.4.10 (without this sites excellent work around!). When trying to add the KRZR as a device it finds it via BT but then lists it as not compatible with iSync. Looks like its going to be up to individuals like yourselves to solve the issue! Bad Apple!

Posted by: David at November 4, 2007 12:02 AM

So I updated my isync with the new MetaClasses.plist file above, it found my new KRZR K1, (great!) it says it has successfully synced the phone with my contacts, but when I look in my phone, the contacts aren't there. Anyone have any suggestions?

Posted by: amy at November 12, 2007 9:22 AM

I'm really baffled. My Krazr (UK, orange network) synced perfectly with my Intel Mac out of the box for about 6 months and has suddenly started coming up with these errors - it tries to connect for about 2 minutes, and then gives error that either 'unable to connect' or 'the device cancelled the connection'. I can still browse the phone's memory via bluetooth to get pictures off it, but I can't sync contacts and calender which is a drag. I can't believe it worked once but has stopped working. Is this a new problem? Has Apple 'broken' something with a recent release that it had previously fixed?

Posted by: Mark at November 14, 2007 6:13 PM

I have a CDMA Krazr on the Telus network (Canada). I can't get iSync to talk to the phone at all. All I get is "this device is not supported by iSync". I have had limited success with bitpim but its pretty clumsy. I am running an Intel Macbook Pro with OX 10.4.11

Any suggestions?

IF YOUR PHONE WILL NOT SYNC. On your phone go to settings/phone info/update phone software. I did this and my phone would then sync. I did not try to sync iCal though. Hope this helps.

Posted by: nick at December 24, 2007 4:00 AM

if you have problems again working with 10.4.11, just redo the same method written in the top of page.

It seems that Apple update pkgs initialize iSyncs meta.plist.

Hello all,

I know how frustrating this can be. My wife just bought a K1 two weeks ago, and was not pleased when I told her that she may have to update her phone book manually. Not a single solution that I came across worked for me, and I looked long and hard, tried over and over again. Just as I was about to give up, success! Bare with me, as I don't recall the exact steps, but it goes something like this:

1. Pair up through Bluetooth Setup Assistant.
2. Open Address Book.
3. Highlight the contact which you'd like to transfer to the phone.
4. Go to the "Card" tab, and select "Send this card".
5. A window will pop up with a list of your Bluetooth devices (ie, Motorola phone). Check that it's your phone that is highlighted.
6. Hit Select and proceed with accepting the transfer on your Krzr.

That's what worked for us...no use of iSync at all! Unfortunately, you have to do this for each contact, but the nice thing is that a contact with multiple phone numbers will transfer as such to your phone...no need to edit.

Hope that helps anyone struggling with this problem. I felt the responsibility to post this, as I understand the frustration out there.

Good luck!
